He was the frontman and co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band with his brother Duane, who died in 1971. Another motorcycle accident the following year claimed Oakley's life.

In a 2013 interview with the Bryan County News, Allman said his favorite part about living in the Richmond Hill area was the "peace and solitude".

Veteran concert promoter Conlon first encountered Allman in 1969, during the band's famous impromptu performance at Piedmont Park.

Their first record flopped, but the Allmans built a regional following through constant touring.
A 22-minute version of "Whipping Post" was a highlight of the group's popular 1971 live album "At Fillmore East".
Yet tragedy struck that same year when Duane was killed in motorcycle accident.
That remained Allman's best rank on the Billboard 200 for almost four decades, until his most recent studio release, Low Country Blues, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the chart dated February 5, 2011, selling 36,000 copies, according to Nielsen Music.
Allman also enjoyed an enduring, if intermittent, career as a solo artist, both while a member of the Allman Brothers Band and during periods when he was away from the group.
"We used to write songs in a graveyard in Macon", Allman said. While there have been several iterations since, the original troupe consisted of the brothers, guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley and drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson, who often goes by the stage name of Jaimoe.

Gregg was Southern rock and Cher was pop music, and the two had very different fan bases.
Lehman told NPR News Allman had finished a new album, which would be released in September.
