Sanctions were also placed on North Korean zinc company, the Korea Zinc Industrial Group, and the Korea Computer Center, which it said is a state-run information technology research center that the Treasury believes to have offices in Germany, China, Syria, and India.
Further complicating the situation is the unpredictable nature of the Kim regime - as well as a shrinking window of time before North Korea is able to develop a ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to the US.
The penalties come as the Trump administration seeks to block North Korea's ability to build a nuclear weapon small enough to put atop a missile, and a ballistic missile powerful enough to deliver it to USA shores.
The council unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution that put North Korea's suspected spy chief, 13 other officials and four entities on the United Nations sanctions blacklist, hitting them with a global travel ban and an assets freeze.
Among the 14 individuals on the Security Council's blacklist are Cho Il U, who is allegedly responsible for North Korean spy operations in other countries.
A bank, two trading companies, and the country's ballistic missile program are also targeted.
Trump also has used gunboat diplomacy by speaking of a US naval "armada" within range of North Korea and noting the presence of USA nuclear submarines in the region.

The analysts see little hope for any resolution, diplomatic or military.
