It's clear the The 15-inch MacBook Pro is in need of a Kaby Lake refresh, which would bring it in line with the rest of the laptop world that's been running Intel's seventh-generation processors for over six months.
The company also announced upgrades for its 27-inch and 21.5-inch iMACS, its desktop computers, which will start at $1,099, with additional models at $1,299 and $1,799. The new MacBook lineup is available starting today.
Apple is introducing updated iMac desktops with improved Retina displays, Kaby Lake Processors, USB-C and graphic boosts.
"It's going to be the most powerful MAC we've ever made", said APPLE VP/Hardware Engineering JOHN TEMUS. Dithering is now 10-bit, allowing for 1 billion colors to be displayed. They have higher memory capacities, faster storage, and Thunderbolt 3 capacity.
The 27-inch 5K model offers up to 64GB of RAM, standard fusion drives, and a choice between the Radeon Pro 570, 565, or 580 cards with up to 8GB of VRAM for 5.5 teraflops of graphics power. Featuring a new, next-generation compute core and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), iMac Pro with the Vega GPU delivers up to an fantastic 11 Teraflops of single-precision compute power for real-time 3D rendering and immersive, high frame rate VR.
Apple is focusing on pro users again.
The new iMac Pro comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports (the old one only had two Thunderbolt 2), plus 10GB Ethernet if you want to rock online old-school, ten times faster than before. To that end Apple announced upgrades to almost every single product in its computer line up, and thoroughly fucked over every single person who bought a MacBook Pro back in November. Without Touch Bars across both of Apple's most popular Mac products, we find it unlikely that major software developers like Adobe will add further support for the Touch Bar to their apps beyond their current lukewarm efforts. With new graphics capabilities, it can also support up to 18 core processors. It ships with the new AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPU with 16GB of HBM2 memory. Apple says the machine is fast enough for real-time 3D rendering, code compiling and designing virtual reality content.
Obviously we'll be testing that in our labs just as soon as we can get hold of review samples.
