A rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers as they practiced Wednesday. But after Wednesday's shooting of Republican Rep. Steve Scalise and several others, they did not immediately land on a new strategy to challenge Trump and the Republican-led Congress.
Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., expressed similar thoughts.
Liberal activist groups likewise called for more civility in politics, then demanded action on their gun control priorities. "He will recover from this assault - and Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation, and frankly the entire world". These acts of violence have no place in our society. "Americans can do better and we deserve better". "Incidents like the attack today are never something many of us even imagine happening". At the time of the shooting Scalise, the third highest-ranking member of the House of Representatives, was being protected by Capitol Police security detail.
The gunman, later identified as 66-year-old IL man James T. Hodgkinson, died from gunshot wounds at the hospital after a gun battle with police at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park Field, where dozens of GOP lawmakers were holding their final practice before an annual charity game against Democrats.
Some Republican lawmakers pointed to the president's own rhetoric.
"My son Lucas learned in first grade at George G. Blaisdell (Elementary School) this year, first to listen and understand, only after to be heard".
She said Republican vitriol and caricatures of her have resulted in "calls to my home constantly, threats in front of my family, really predicated on their comments and their paid ads".
"Thank goodness for Agents Bailey and Griner", he said.
Lawmakers described the helplessness of their situation and the overpowering sense of relief when they realized the Capitol Police were in the fight.
"While the president would like to attend the game and show his support for all of these courageous public servants, he has been advised that there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols", Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday.
In one early sign of the new pro-gun environment, Congress in February passed a resolution to block a rule that would have kept guns out of the hands of certain people with mental disorders. "At that point, I got struck in leg, and made a run for it". I called the Secret Service and that person was picked up.
"The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", hospital officials said.
Doctors said Scalise will require several more operations.
Williams said he was not sure if one particular Republican was the target of Wednesday's shooting, but given Hodgkinson's vocal outrage for the Republican party and President Trump on social media, he believes members of Congress in general were the targets. "We said it was Republicans and he kind of started walking to the field", Representative Ron DeSantis told Fox Business Network.
