Even if the male senators interrupting her may not realize there's a pattern forming, the internet certainly did.
Last week, Senators Richard Burr and John McCain nearly shushed her when she asked questions to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. During a CNN panel discussion, political analyst Kirsten Powers challenged one of her colleagues, CNN political commentator and former Trump campaign spokesperson Jason Miller, who had described Harris's actions as "hysterical". Unfortunately, the lesson didn't seem to stick, as Arizona Senator John McCain proved Tuesday when he cut Harris off for the second week in a row-this time, as she questioned Attorney General Jeff Sessions before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
This reaction to Harris is a double standard. He has been getting grilled a lot in the Russian probe and Senator Kamala Harris really went at him. "So it's actually just unique to a woman and her uterus". It's for the good of the nation that she refuses to be silent. She doesn't raise her voice or throw around accusations or insults. I wouldn't say she was any more dogged than Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) was at the hearing. So why did Sessions refuse to answer one, but was so quick to answer the other?
What was unusual, however, was the level of disrespect shown to Harris, a woman of color.
And she made the crucial observation that we must reject "the false choice presented by our politics that you have to choose between caring about economic issues or caring about 'women's issues.' You can not separate them". She is an inspiration. Thirteen men were tasked with creating a healthcare plan that could have the most impact on women, yet no women were present.
HOSTIN: They don't do it to men. Harris asked Sessions if he had any contact with Russian that had not been disclosed previously, or if he had communicated with any Russian businessmen or nationals. She is Arianna Huffington and Hillary Clinton.
"But he wasn't hysterical, and she was", Powers quipped. This is when Harris insisted that he answer.
Buried beneath all the noise lies the heart of why Harris was silenced on Tuesday: she was in the midst of striking a major blow to Sessions' testimony, a move that would have brought Sessions' credibility to its knees.
Senator McCain is an ex officio member of the committee, and he spoke out of turn to say that "the witness should be allowed to answer the question." Sen.
But just because things are the same now, does not mean that we should be complacent and accept the status quo.
Despite serving as the nation's top law enforcement officer, Sessions said he never received a briefing on Russia's meddling in the election, and never read the unclassified report on that meddling that was issued jointly by the nation's intelligence agencies.
The possibility that political operatives may have colluded with a foreign government, in any way, must be investigated. If she were a white male, she would be praised for her tough questions and no-nonsense demeanor.
Americans want answers. We want to believe the truth still matters in politics.
"How was Sen. Kamala D. Harris hysterical?" Again, the witness filibustered and again the questioner was repeatedly interrupted.
